Story

The Skills Hubs Motor Mechanics Workshop at West Drayton Young People's Centre (WDYPC) is a safe place for many vulnerable young people in the local community and gives them an opportunity to learn and gain Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) accredited qualifications in mechanics.

The Skills Hub also works in partnership with Hillingdon Community Trust to run a number of evening sessions for local young people and their families. Courses such as car and bicycle maintenance are offered to young people who would otherwise be on the streets.

Sadly, a few weeks ago there was a fire at the centre and as a result, the motor mechanics car washing bay, its vehicles, equipment and projects the young people were working on were all destroyed.

The centre has now reopened, but unfortunately the young people are unable to work towards their qualifications due to a lack of equipment and vehicles needed to aide them.

A parent from the local community has said "My son has gone to all the evening courses and this has been a very positive experience for him because he has learnt practical skills and improved his confidence. Places like this are needed in our community and I really value what Zahir and the team do there."

Armari, a student who attends the course said "The Workshop at WDYPC is a great place to hang out, learn new skills and make friends. I started by going to the bicycle course and then went on to the car maintenance course to get a full qualification. I still go there in the evenings and help work on projects. The fire was terrible and a real blow to me as I really love being able to go to the workshop."
