Uffculme High School is a comprehensive, serving a largely rural community on the Devon/Somerset border with easy access to the M5. It caters for over 1,000 11-16 students and has a strong reputation both locally and nationally.
It is one of the only secondary schools in Devon without an astro turf pitch that would allow students to play a variety of sports in all weathers. The school has already been granted planning permission for this facility on the school site by Mid Devon District Council (MDDC).
The school already opens their doors every weekday evening and weekend to allow the public to use their gym, dance studio and sports hall. An astro pitch would just be an addition for the local community to use.
The school has made specific links with both Tiverton White Eagles Hockey Club (TWEHC) and Tiverton Mens Hockey Club (TMHC), both of which are growing clubs and are in need of more pitch space. There are several other sports clubs locally (football, tennis, rugby, athletics), that would utilise the facility once it has been built.
We are looking to raise a total of £550,000 through a mixture of grants and local fundraising.
Participation in sport is declining and the public health warnings by the NHS about child obesity is on the increase. Along with poor mental health in children. Participation in sport or PE at school can help to improve the health and wellbeing of children both physically and mentally, and possibly introduce them to a sporting community that can keep them fit and well for the rest of their lives. We believe providing the facilities for children and all those in the local community is the first step in changing our culture.
We appreciate that the total amount for this facility is huge, however every penny counts towards our goal and being able to change this community for the better. Remember this facility would cover the costs for its own maintenance and possibly generate some funds to plough back into developing this school for the future.
We would keep in touch with all donors and update the facebook page as to our progress re: timing for spending the money. Please carefully consider if you are able to contribute to this project. Every bit counts.
