For quite a few years Glenlola Collegiate have been supporting Charlene's Project to try and bring secondary education to a remote area of western Uganda. Previously the 6,500 children in the 8 local primary schools had no opportunity to go to secondary school. THAT IS NOW CHANGED WITH THE OPENING OF CHARLENE SECONDARY SCHOOL.
Already over 450 pupils are attending the school which has solar pumped water, solar electric and internet (some of our pupils and teachers are already sharing learning experiences via ZOOM with our friends in Uganda). It is anticipated that numbers will soon swell to over 1,000 and already more facilities are needed to provide for the many children who will attend in the years ahead.
This year's Uganda Dander, on Wednesday 21st June will raise money towards an additional classroom block for the students in Uganda. Pupils will be walking from Bangor to Crawfordsburn and back again; a total of 6.5 miles. All the money raised will help support the recently built, and much needed, ‘Charlene Secondary School’ in a rural area of Uganda. This is an endeavour which we have been supporting financially and are very excited to be involved.
Our pupils also sponsor, through the school Houses, 6 girls from impoverished backgrounds to allow them to attend secondary education. All donations are gratefully received and will help us to commit, contribute and care for our friends in Uganda. Thank you!
