Story
Life is tough in this region with a high death rate of mothers and babies during childbirth. The Rose of Sharon Medical Centre has now seen 300 babies born and we have never lost a mother. We have helped reduced the mortality statistics in childbirth and now aim to tackle Cervical cancer which is the number one cancer killer in Uganda for women. Many ladies suffer unnecessarily due to the lack of equipment and centres to screen for the disease. Poverty and the fear of a poor diagnosis keeps them away and many suffer in silence, yet could be saved with early intervention. With only 2-3 centres nationally, and none in the North, we are going ahead with the purchase of a Colposcope and have the support of one of the leading specialists in the nation to help us set up and train our staff before the end of November 2019. We have offers of funding from two major corporate donors for the treatment equipment and building of a purpose built ward, but we have to get operational as a diagnostic service to secure that funding- hence the appeal. The £8000 will cover all the ancillary equipment, disposables, staff expenses and above all the intense and specialised training programme in Colposcopy over three months, commencing as soon as our Colposcope arrives.
