Story
Monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding in northeastern Bangladesh and India, stranding nearly 6 million people and killing at least 41 people to date that authorities are aware of. The flooding in Bangladesh, described by a government expert as potentially the country's worst since 2004, was exacerbated by the runoff from heavy rain across Indian mountains.
Since the beginning of the floods (mid-June) Sayem, our UKBET Executive Director, along with local volunteers (college and university students) have been distributing essential food and supplies to stranded, devastated and hungry families affected by the flooding. By June 20th we had already served over 6,000 cooked meals and were able to transport over 1,500 packs of dry food goods to people in the more remote, stranded areas of Sylhet, which were cut off and surrounded by water.
Since then, each day has begun at 5 am, cooking food in a neighbour's courtyard in order to send out supplies to families cut off from essential supplies. Our UKBET volunteers have also been working to ensure that sanitary items are also distributed along with food packs. We have also worked with a group of student volunteers in collecting and refilling bottles from restaurants and hotels in order to disperse amongst the community. With your help, we can do more.
With no access to electricity, transportation and communication severely affected, essential supplies are in dire need. If you can, please donate to ensure that more families are helped during this horrific time.
What will we do?
**Short term** Emergency food packs and clean drinking water/water purification tablets, sanitary items etc.
**Long term** Home and business support to ensure communities can rebuild, medical support for those who cannot afford treatment.
