Langar on Campus – A Sikh Practice of Equality, Service, and Humanity
The University of Birmingham was the first university to introduce the concept Langar on campus into an academic space to model equality, humility, and service in action.
Your Support Matters!!!! By supporting Langar on Campus, you are:
-Helping to feed almost 2000 people in 1 day
-Supporting equality in a practical, visible way
-Enabling students of all backgrounds to experience Seva and community
It is a statement that everyone belongs.
Langar was designed as a direct challenge to inequality, caste divisions, and social hierarchy.
-Food is vegetarian (so all can eat together)
-Food is served without discrimination
-Everyone sits side by side on the floor, regardless of status to reflect that all humans are equal before God.
The Sikh Principles Behind Langar:
Langar is grounded in the 3 core Sikh values taught by the Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
*Seva (Selfless Service) : Serving others without ego, recognition, or reward.
*Kirat Karni and Vand Chakna: Earn honestly and share what you have with others.
-Creates a neutral, non judgemental welcoming space
-Demonstrates Sikh values through action, not preaching
-Supports students facing financial pressure or isolation
-Encourages dialogue through shared experience
-Langar does not ask people to adopt Sikh beliefs — it simply serves them.
There are no administrative costs, no salaries, and no profit involved.
Every donation directly supports the delivery of UoB Langar on campus event.
