GivingTuesday came about in 2012 when author Henry Timms wanted to reverse the consumerism trend (ahem, thanks, Black Friday and Cyber Monday) to give back to the world. The United Nations Foundation co-founded and supported the idea, plus, Bill Gates helped give the day more visibility by tweeting about it, and the rest is history.
