Story
Gynaecological cancer is any cancer that begins in female reproductive organs.
Our Gynae VOiCE campaign aims to support the department at NNUH to assist local women going through or having experienced any gynaecological cancers, including Vulval, Ovarian, Cervical and Endometrial cancers.
Around 22,050 women and people with gynaecological organs are diagnosed with one of these cancers each year in the UK.
Almost 7,400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year, and over 4100 women die from ovarian cancer each year.
This makes ovarian cancer the 6th most common cancer in women. Over 1/2 of all ovarian cancers in the UK are diagnosed in women over the age of 65. The risk factors include a history of ovarian or breast cancer in the family, inherited faulty genes, and having had breast cancer before.
Ovarian cancer is often known as a "silent killer" because 55-60% of women are diagnosed once the cancer has already spread e.g. stage 3 or 4.
Cervical cancer is the 14th most common cancer among women in the UK. However, among women aged 25-49, cervical cancer is one of the five most common cancers. 8% of women within that age group are diagnosed with the disease.
Endometrial cancer is the 4th most common cancer among women in the UK and the most common of the five gynaecological cancers. Over 9,700 people are diagnosed every year in the UK. Womb cancer is more common in those with gynaecological organs over the age of 50, with 7% of those being diagnosed with cancer between 50-74 being affected with uterine cancer.
Please help us to support even better care for Gynae patients at our local hospitals.
