Story
Wakefield Imagination Library has gifted over 66,000 books to 2,500 children in Wakefield since 2017 as part of Dolly Parton’s global network of Imagination Libraries.
With your help we want to grow the number of children in Wakefield who are gifted books monthly. This improves their future outlook, and grows the prospects of Wakefield as a community,
Simply put, each registered child receives one book of their very own, per month, from birth to age five. The book is mailed directly to the child’s address enabling a family to start to build their own library at home, and to gift them the joy and skill of reading. There is no cost to the receiving family.
This is important for the future of Wakefield. We believe that by improving child literacy we will in the long term improve the skill and qualification levels of our local population which are currently below national benchmarks. This in turn should support the long-term prosperity and well-being of Wakefield.
Wakefield Imagination Library is run by a partnership between Wakefield Council and Spectrum Community Health CIC, collaborating with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The Council provide all the administrative support needed; with books selected, procured and mailed at scale via the global reach of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Donations go towards the costs of the books and their mailing; the more funds we raise the more books we can gift.
It costs just £26 a year to mail a child with twelve books, or £130 to sustain a child on the scheme for the full five years.
We’re looking to raise £20,000 between 7th - 23rd November 2025 so that we can support even more children in Wakefield.
