Story
A selfless group of Celtic supporters known as The WanderBhoys have taken on challenges all over the world, including scaling the world famous Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019 and trekking through the Andes mountain range to Machu Picchu in Peru in 2023 – all in the name of Celtic FC Foundation, raising a wonderful total of over £72K.
They had initially planned to trek the Great Wall of China last year but, due to government restrictions in the region, this was unfortunately impossible. Undeterred, the group swiftly adjusted their focus to Machu Picchu, ensuring the Foundation would still benefit from their hard-earned fundraising efforts.
Following their phenomenal success, some members of the group – along with a batch of new recruits – will now be taking on a fresh challenge in April 2026, as they turn their attention back to the Great Wall of China. The Foundation has, once again, been very generously selected as the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts and they are looking for supporters to join them for what promises to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Great Wall of China is the longest man-made structure ever built at 21,196 kilometres long, offering a unique challenge which is physically demanding but also offers fabulous, never-ending scenery and a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history.
The WanderBhoys will once again be led by Scottish actor Frank Gilhooley, known for his roles in River City, Still Game and Outlander. Speaking ahead of the Trek, Frank said: “Cycling across Australia some years ago gave me a thirst to do more for those who truly need help. With Celtic FC Foundation always close to my heart, I started The WanderBhoys as a way to raise essential funds for the Foundation’s great causes, whilst enabling Celtic fans to tackle ‘bucket list’ challenges.
“Our first challenge was Kilimanjaro with a team of 10 Celtic supporters which proved to be a profound and genuinely life-changing experience. Then in 2023, I was blessed to lead a team of 14 WanderBhoys and Ghirls on the four-day hike along the Inca trail to the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru. The lifelong friendships we all made on such a beautiful journey are incredible.
“The Great Wall Of China 2026 promises to be our greatest adventure yet and I cannot wait but, with only 21 spaces up for grabs, availability is limited. Please join us and immerse yourself entirely in the wonderful and ancient culture of rural China. Hail Hail.”
