Warwick Clews was rugby captain at Warwick School in the early 1980s, and his son Theo Brophy-Clews played rugby for England U18s/U20s and was a professional at London Irish until multiple concussions forced him to retire at the age of 24.
Theo got Warwick involved in Head for Change 18 months ago, and he is now a Trustee. As a passionate fan of all sports, particularly rugby, and as an ex-player, coach and dad, he was concerned about the lack of understanding of the good and potentially bad impacts sports can have on the brain.
Over the past year Warwick has led the development of our free BrainSafe education course along with children's author Dr Dean Burnett, with inputs from teachers, sports and medical experts including Head for Change’s founders Dr Sally Tucker and ex-Wales rugby international Alix Popham.
A pilot of the course is currently underway in 8 schools, rugby and football clubs in England, Wales and US, with over 400 children participating. So far the feedback has been very positive and we are planning a roll out from Autumn this year.
A small group of old Warwick School boys are doing the Warwick to Warwick with Warwick cycle in July to raise awareness, and to raise funds to support the roll-out of this important education course.
