When COVID started in 2020 the government launched an Emergency Food Box Program to distribute free food boxes to those in the local community who were struggling with food poverty. In April 2020 St Frideswide’s Water Eaton and Bletchley and Fenny Town Council partnered together to assist Sofea/FareShare deliver these boxes every week direct to people’s doors. By September 2020 it was obvious that the Emergency Food Box Program was not a sustainable model, so we worked with SOFEA to replace the box scheme with a Community Larder membership model.
Water Eaton Community Hub has a membership-based facility where surplus supermarket/manufacturer’s food is prevented from going to landfill, instead it is distributed to members. In addition, there is a café where people can access a free lunch and hot drinks, you can meet people, make friends, and access the support services.
We believe that food waste should not exist, and everyone deserves affordable access to nutritious, healthy food.
By preventing food waste and providing food for those facing financial hardships, we actively combat food waste and support individuals in need.
