Wellies and Wander 2026

Campaign by Groundwork

All children deserve the chance to play, explore and thrive in safe outdoor spaces — no matter where they live. Groundwork’s Wellies in the Woods brings outdoor play and learning to young children and their families in communities in need.

We work to transform lives in the UK’s most disadvantaged communities. We help people gain confidence and skills, get into training and work, protect and improve green spaces, lead more active lives and overcome significant challenges such as poverty, isolation, low skills and poor health.

Story

According to research, only 27% of children regularly play outside near their homes.

Groundwork's Wellies in the Woods aims to inspire families to connect with nature right on their doorsteps – engaging with outdoor play by demonstrating low-to no-cost activities which families can do at home. These activities take place in green spaces, with a core focus on stories and books to support children’s development, whilst significantly improving health and wellbeing.

Support Groundwork’s Wellies in the Woods programme by taking on our ‘Wellies and Wander’ challenge.

The challenge is simple: walk 1 mile a day for 30 days, and use our handy bingo card to help you notice and interact with the nature around you along the way.

By taking part and raising funds, you’ll help more families experience the joy of outdoor play and nature-based learning.
