Story
Why support welly week?
Reacting to what the elements throw at you is all part of a farmers life, but extreme weather creates extreme challenges.
In July, the Yorkshire Dales were hit with flash floods and storms that caused devastation to farms. Many farmers were left picking up the pieces of their damaged property and faced the loss of livestock.
Regional manager Sally Conner and welfare officer John Basnett attended an event at the Leyburn Auction Market to let affected farmers know that help is available. Following this, weve been able to give £22k in grants to nine farmers and their families to cover the cost of domestic bills while they get back on their feet.
We often find theres a time lag between someone suffering hardship and contacting us, said Malcolm Thomas, chairman. We expect to receive more calls to our helpline as a result of the bad weather during the coming months.
Storms may disappear as quickly as they arrive but the devastating impact on those farming families affected can be long-lasting.
