Story

This initiative was started by a few like-minded individuals who are committed to improving the lives of disabled people overseas through recycling and reusing critical life changing mobility aids that would otherwise be discarded and cannot be utilised in the UK.

This small but growing organization was inspired when in 2016 we came across a chance discovery of 150 used wheelchairs destined for the scrapyard. Overwhelmed by the demand for them by those in need overseas we managed to source the funding to purchase and then send these where they have literally transformed the future of hundreds of men, women and children.

Since then we have managed to source and send over 5000 wheelchairs and 1500 of other mobility aids overseas. A number of countries have benefited from this initiative. These include; Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

Last year we expanded our organisations supply of mobility aids by offering a free quarterly uplift service to Care Homes across Scotland as they too have no option other than sending these potentially transformative aids to waste or scrap facilities.

Our base is also investigating providing a similar type of quarterly uplift service to local housing associations who are often left with these types of items when tenants move on for a variety of reasons into other locations.

We are a 100% donation and volunteer led project and believe this is an amazing opportunity for your team to help the most vulnerable and overlooked in society.

Research has found that in developing countries only 10% of disabled people possess a wheelchair, which means millions of disabled people in third-world countries face unnecessary barriers to fulfilling their life potential. Many simply cant afford a wheelchair which can cost between £300-£500. 46% of those without a wheelchair have never left their homes.

One mans waste is another mans treasure. This phrase epitomises the ethos behind Wheels to Heal.

£25 is all it costs to rescue and deliver door to door one good quality used wheelchair to a disabled person in need - transforming their life by enabling access to education, employment and society as a whole. It also provide much needed relief for their carers.
