Story
“As a carer, people often tell you about things you should get or do to help but often the caring role is so overwhelming, I have no energy left. The staff and volunteers at Big Hearts support me with the help I need to take a break whilst knowing my husband is at his happiest.”
With your support, we can help more carers like Margaret.
Margaret is in her 60’s and lovingly cares for her husband James’ since his dementia diagnosis.
Margaret felt she couldn’t leave James alone, and gave up her hobbies like her walking group. With no time to herself, Margaret was exhausted and isolated and her mental and physical health deteriorated.
But when Margaret and James discovered the Big Hearts Memories group - everything shifted. From the first moment when they came in, being surrounded by football memorabilia and around other Jambos sparked something in James. Margaret said “his face lit up” - and she felt relief she hadn’t felt in years.
Finally Margaret felt safe leaving James alone. She knew he was safe, happy and cared for at Tynecastle Park. Knowing he was cared for meant Margaret could have some breathing space again. She returned to her walking group, and regular exercise and time for herself meant her sleep, energy and wellbeing all massively improved.
It gave me my life back in small but important ways. I can breathe again, and I’m not just a carer: I’m me.
Please donate to our Winter Appeal today to help a carer like Margaret.
THANK YOU!
