We live in a society that allows very little space to think about what makes life meaningful. At HCC we aim to offer this space, viewing counselling as a fundamental engagement with one’s internal world, state of vulnerability and what makes life meaningful for each individual person. Rather than looking to eliminate symptoms, we listen carefully to them, and help people to understand their meanings within the context of their lives.
Through trying to understand the root causes of suffering, and working through one’s underlying conflicts or trauma, we aim to increase psychological flexibility and self-awareness, allowing people to cope better with the inherent difficulties of life, and making it easier to seek support when needed.
Our psychotherapists work with each person on a case by case basis, without defining what recovery looks like for them - everyone’s experience and process will be completely different.
"I was suffering from depression and very low self-esteem mainly as a result of the end of a 10 year relationship in addition to losing my father who was very dear to me. I had also retired from full time employment and feeling lost, with very little trust in friends or others that I came into contact with in addition to having very minimal trust in my own convictions.
I found the therapy I received from HCC extremely helpful because it enabled me to see the underlying causes of my depression, low self-esteem and lack of trust. I was able to look back on my life experiences and the way in which I responded to them in the light of my childhood and the formative experiences that had a deep impact upon the way in which I viewed myself and others.
I really do feel that the therapy I received will help me to cope with future difficulties because I now have a much deeper understanding and acceptance of myself, who I am, and my experiences throughout my life. This has helped me to understand the way in which I respond to certain experiences and the way in which I view others. I am now much more comfortable with who I am and more understanding of others which I believe will be a tremendous help when coping with future difficulties."
