Between the 8-10th August 2026, our team will attempt to climb Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, rising to 4,810 metres (15,780ft) above sea level to raise £15,000 for Wooden Spoon, the Children’s Charity of Rugby.

This serious alpine undertaking demands months of preparation, resilience under pressure, and absolute respect for the mountain. In addition to training days on the crags of the South Coast of England to the Snow fields of Wales, the team will climb Gran Paradiso (4,061m) in Italy, before heading off to conquer Mont Blanc itself.

Once on Mont Blanc, to reach the summit, we will follow the Goûter Route, a line that is as iconic as it is unforgiving. The route is long, exposed, and physically punishing, with real objective hazards throughout, including the notorious Grand Couloir a narrow crossing beneath unstable rock faces, where stone fall is frequent and timing is critical. It is a place where hesitation can be dangerous, and composure matters.

Overnighting at the Goûter Hut, Summit Day begins in the early hours of the morning, typically around 2am, moving by headtorch into freezing temperatures below -25c and thin air. Every step becomes harder. Breathing is laboured.

The final push follows the Bosses Ridge, a narrow, exposed snow crest with steep drops on either side. Here, physical exhaustion meets mental pressure. The Successful Summit arrival rewards with the symbolic placing of the Wooden Spoon Rugby Ball.

Wooden Spoon exist to help the 1.2 million children living with a disability, the 4.3 million children who live in poverty and the 1 in 5 children who suffer with a mental health issue.

With the support of the rugby community from grass roots local clubs to the national unions, over the last 40 years we’ve funded £32 million in grants and changed the lives of 1.5 million children and young people.

But we need your help more than ever as more children need our help. In the last year Wooden Spoon was only able to fund one in ten of the grant applications we received due to the increased demand for our support.
