Woodlands Primary School Celebrates Successful Fancy Dress Fun Run

Woodlands Primary School held its much-anticipated annual fundraising fun run today, Tuesday 2nd June, bringing colour, creativity and community spirit to the forefront. With a “fancy dress fun” theme, pupils arrived dressed in wonderfully wacky outfits, from imaginative costumes to eye-catching inflatables, creating a truly joyful atmosphere across the school grounds.

The event was a huge success, and the school shared how humbled it felt by the extraordinary efforts of children, staff and parents alike. Everyone embraced the occasion with enthusiasm, not only dressing up but also showing incredible commitment to supporting this year’s fundraising efforts.

This event holds particular significance, with funds raised supporting causes that are deeply personal to the school community. Mrs Duncombe, Headteacher, states: “We are passionate about recognising the incredible work charities do to support children, particularly those within the Woodlands community. Last year’s event raised £600 for Hope House, who provided outstanding care for Piper and family; while this year the school has chosen to focus on four specific causes, we recognise there are many more amazing children living with conditions and disabilities who face each day with remarkable resilience, determination and smiles and already have ideas about next year’s event!”

Part of the fundraising will go towards kidney research, in gratitude for the care given to Teddy, a cheerful and resilient child who has lived with kidney disease since birth. Teddy is now facing end-stage renal failure and is about to begin dialysis treatment three times a week. Despite spending much of life in hospital, Teddy continues to inspire those around him with remarkable strength. In the future, Teddy is set to receive a kidney transplant from a parent, and the funds raised will contribute towards vital research into improving treatments and finding a cure.

The school also raised money for the Sickle Cell Society, supporting children like Tyler, who has faced an exceptionally challenging year. After undergoing a stem cell transplant, Tyler has been unable to attend school throughout the entire academic year. Despite ongoing health difficulties, Tyler has remained positive and regularly connects with classmates online, maintaining an important link with school life. The charity’s work helps ensure children like Tyler receive the care and support needed during recovery.

Juvenile arthritis research is another key focus, inspired by Evelyn’s journey. Diagnosed at just 18 months old with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Evelyn temporarily lost the ability to walk due to severe joint pain and stiffness. After years of treatment, Evelyn found a medication that led to remission, although recent flare-ups have required further care. Evelyn has also taken part in a research study to help improve understanding of the condition, showing incredible bravery. Like many children with JIA, Evelyn continues to manage daily challenges that are not always visible.

Funds will also support Action Cerebral Palsy, helping children like Thomas. For several years, Thomas experienced difficulties with walking, initially believed to be a minor issue. Further investigations led to a diagnosis of mild cerebral palsy, affecting both learning and physical comfort. Thomas has now begun physiotherapy and will soon receive supportive braces to improve mobility and balance. With the right support, Thomas is now better equipped to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

In addition to supporting these meaningful causes, part of the funds raised will go towards improving the school’s playground facilities. The current adventure play area, now over 13 years old, is showing significant wear and is no longer suitable for all pupils. Plans are underway to create a more inclusive space, including a new “trim trail” designed for all children to enjoy while developing strength, coordination and confidence.

Following the success of the event, the school is also reaching out to the wider community. Any local businesses interested in supporting the PTFA, either through charitable donations or by sponsoring the new playground development, are warmly encouraged to get in touch.

With a day filled with laughter, creativity and generosity, Woodlands Primary School’s fun run was a true celebration of community spirit- all in support of causes that mean so much to so many.
