Wheels to Heal has recycled over 40,000 mobility and disability aids for reuse overseas. Disabled people in 20 countries have benefited; Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, Gambia, Iraq, Lebanon, Malawi, Morroco, Pakistan, Palestine, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen.

Story

Approximately 4.5 million people in Yemen—roughly 15% of the population—live with disabilities, a figure largely driven by nearly a decade of conflict, injuries, and collapsing healthcare infrastructure. Persons with disabilities face extreme challenges, including limited access to aid, destroyed infrastructure, and poverty.

Key Aspects of Disability in Yemen

Conflict-Induced Disabilities: The ongoing war has significantly increased the number of people with disabilities due to violence and injuries. About 18% of Yemen's child population has functional difficulties in at least one domain, such as seeing, hearing, or walking.

Barriers to Care: Roughly 81% of people with disabilities report they are unable to access humanitarian services. Challenges include inaccessible infrastructure, the high cost of transportation, and roads damaged or contaminated with landmines.

Infrastructure Collapse: The conflict has damaged nearly half of Yemen’s health facilities and a third of schools, severely reducing access to necessary rehabilitation and education.

Displaced Populations: Persons with disabilities in Internally Displaced People (IDP) sites face extreme difficulty, with little to no access to basic, accessible shelter and hygiene facilities.

Social Stigma: Individuals often face, and fear, stigma and negative attitudes from the community.

What can you do?

Wheels to Heal is a registered UK charity that offers a FREE quarterly uplift of unwanted mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, Zimmer frames, care beds, walking sticks, commodes, three wheel supports / trolleys, blankets and much more. We up-cycle this mobility equipment for reuse by disabled people in third world countries. The initiative has recycled over 40,000 mobility aids to date.

These items are put to incredibly good use in countries such as; Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Gambia, Ghana, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Malawi, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Yemen where they transform lives.

Donating to this appeal will ensure we can get the aids to Yemen soon after Ramadan inshallah. In Yemen we are working with Action for Humanity who will help to distribute the items.

Zakat is specifically designed to support those who are unable to look after themselves, as well as those in various states of financial or social vulnerability. Scholars allow for the purchase of specific, necessary items (such as wheelchairs, medicine, or medical equipment) directly from zakat funds for a poor person, rather than giving them cash, particularly if they are unable to buy these items themselves.

Equally important gifting mobility and dignity is one of the best forms of Sadaqa and Sadaqa Jariya.

Becoming a regular donor means you will support an entirley volunteer led charity with a 100% donation policy simply trying to do the right thing. With your help we can rescue many more aids from landfill and reach more people in need.

Who will benefit.

A Mother’s Silent Struggle (Remote area of Lahj/Yemen, urgent need)

In a remote area north of Lahj, Yemen, an elderly mother is the sole caregiver for her young son who is living with a disability. The care he needs is urgent—but distance, transport costs, and limited local services create barriers that feel impossible to overcome.

Despite everything, she continues—patient, protective, and determined. With timely help—referrals, transport support, and access to specialized services—their lives could change quickly and dramatically.

How your support helps: access to medical care through referrals and transport assistance, basic rehabilitation support, and family protection services for isolated households.

Abdullah & Abdulrahman (Two brothers, one family’s long fight)

Abdullah and Abdulrahman are teenagers living with paralysis. For 15 years, their father has carried the weight of their care—spending nearly all he earns on medical bills, transport, and assistive devices.

In Yemen’s harsh economic reality, the family’s choices are often impossible: pay for treatment, or pay for daily necessities. Yet their father continues, driven by hope that his sons can live with more comfort, independence, and opportunity.

How your support helps: assistive devices, physiotherapy support, and targeted cash/health assistance that reduces catastrophic spending and keeps families afloat.

Yaqoub’s Determination (A father doing the impossible)

Yaqoub is the head of a household and a father of four. He is also living with a disability himself—yet he refuses to let that define what his children can become. Every day is a test of endurance: managing pain, working within his limits, and trying to provide in a context where even basic income is uncertain.

His children are his motivation. With structured support, families like Yaqoub’s can stabilize, regain their footing, and move from surviving day-to-day to planning for a future.

How your support helps: livelihoods and income support, referrals to services, and family-centered assistance that protects children from negative coping mechanisms.

Yasmine’s Journey (Aden)

Yasmine is a young girl in Aden living with a disability in a family facing severe economic hardship. Her parents want nothing more than to see her thrive, but the cost of medical follow-ups, therapy, and basic support is far beyond what they can afford.

Still, Yasmine’s spirit stands out—curious, hopeful, and eager to learn and play like any other child. With the right assistance, Yasmine can access the care and support that improves mobility, strengthens her independence, and helps her participate fully in everyday life.

How your support helps: medical follow-ups, rehabilitation sessions, and essential assistive support that allows children like Yasmine to learn, play, and grow with dignity.
