Story
Children suffering in poverty
For millions of children worldwide, poverty is a never-ending cycle that they cannot escape, leading to lifelong challenges and a future dictated by their family circumstances in their formative years.
World Villages for Children and the Sisters of Mary provide nearly 20,000 children every year with free, quality academic and vocational education at one of our schools in the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, and Tanzania.
For thousands of children, poverty is compounded by a lack of access to good education. Living in rural communities without adequate provision of schools, or basic amenities like electricity and running water, makes life for children born into poverty that much harder.
Families living in poverty often rely on their older children to care for younger ones, and to work alongside families to help provide food, and so many are forced to leave school to provide for their families.

The power of education to address poverty
We believe in the transformative power of education in children's lives and their families. Educating one child has a profound impact on their families and future generations, providing the skills and tools they need to transform their lives, and earn an income to keep them free from a life of poverty.
Equality of opportunity is hard to achieve when families are disadvantaged by poverty. With no money for transport to school, books, uniform, or even food, many children slip through the cracks and never complete their primary or secondary education.
How we are fighting poverty with education
When a child comes to World Villages for Children, all of these barriers to education are removed. The children live at school, allowing them to focus on their studies and have a proper childhood, free from caring responsibilities.
They receive everything they need, for free, provided by generous donors.
Food, clothing, school books, academic and vocational education, teaching, care and all of their daily needs are met. This, with support into employment when they graduate, gives them everything they need to complete an education and move into long term, sustainable employment to provide financially for themselves and their families.
