Visit the charity's profileRCGFB is proud to announce the winner of our Second Annual Young Artist Solo Competition. The competition was open to all 10th-12th grade band students throughout the Portland tri-county area and SW Washington. Sexual orientation or gender identity was not a factor in the selection process.
Introducing John Nguyen: a senior band student of Ashley Alexander at Westview High School in Beaverton, Oregon. John currently studies flute privately with Corrie Cook and Dawn Weiss, who have nurtured him to become Principal Piccoloist in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS). John is also the 2019 winner of the MYS Concerto Competition and will perform the Ibert Concerto for Flute Movement 3 with them on March 3. In addition, John has performed in principal positions for the Westview Wind Ensemble, Beaverton School District Honor Band, Western International Band Clinic, and has earned high positions for National Association for Music Educators All-Northwest Band and Oregon Music Educators Association All-State Band.
John will be performing the Ibert Concerto for Flute Movement 3 on April 20th at 7:30 with the Portland Gay Symphonic Band at Kaul Auditorium on the Reed College Campus. Tickets: suggested donation $20 at the door.
