We are a volunteering project that aims to combat loneliness and isolation in the elderly community of York and establish inter-generational connections. We do this by hosting coffee mornings at the University each week during term time so that they can chat with student volunteers in a relaxed setting. As well as our weekly sessions, we also have occasional outings and meals. It’s a wonderful opportunity to talk to new people and do some good for the community. Our elderly members frequently tell us how grateful they are and what a positive impact Tea and Coffee Club has had on their well-being. University can also be isolating and stressful at times, so it’s an opportunity for students to meet new people, and can also help combat homesickness.
We provide free transport for our elderly members, which is so important to us, as we understand that the elderly often face several physical and financial barriers when it comes to socialisation. Transport is our biggest expense, and unfortunately there is a large discrepancy between our funding and the cost of transport. We have received amazing help from YuFund for this year, but in order for the club to continue running in the future, we are trying to raise awareness of what we do and raise money to help fund our cause.
Peter has enjoyed Tea and Coffee Club since October 2021, and stated he feels happier since joining the Tea and Coffee Club, and talking to people cheers him up. He likes that he can meet students, rather than just talk to other elderly people.
It’s nice to meet young people and I think they appreciate it as well. I find that everyone is interested in what I have to say

It’s brightened my life - It’s nice to look forward to something and I’m very appreciative of the fact that we get a free cab ride. I particularly enjoyed our last visit to the fish and chips shop! I like young people - talking to them keeps my mind a bit more active.
It is the highlight of many of our elderly friends’ week and there is a mutual benefit from talking about our life experiences and finding common ground it builds a culture of understanding and support which defies generations - Jodie
I love seeing how much joy being out of the house brings to the elderly members and being part of their lives is so fulfilling - Elena
One of the best things about the club is that it's such a mutually enjoyable experience! As a volunteer the meetings are one of the highlights of my week and I know for a fact that our elderly members feel the same way - Annabel
I really enjoy volunteering at this society; chatting with old people is a way to do something different from studying and seeing them smiling keeps me motivated to continue doing it - Giulia
