Every Donkey Deserves a Better Life

For many families across Zambia, working donkeys are essential. They carry water and goods, provide transport and help families earn a living.

But behind this vital role are animals that can face injury, illness, overwork and preventable suffering, often with limited access to veterinary care or information about their welfare.

The Zambezi Working Donkey Project exists to change this. ZWDP is a registered UK and Zambian charity operating in Livingstone, Zambia. We work alongside donkey owners and communities to improve the lives of working donkeys and create practical, lasting change.

Our work takes us beyond our rescue centre and into communities. We provide veterinary care, run mobile clinics, educate donkey owners, make improved harnesses and equipment, and respond to donkeys who need urgent treatment, rehabilitation or a safe place to recover.

We believe improving donkey welfare also means supporting the people who rely on these animals. Our approach is practical, community-based and focused on creating lasting change.
