Our mission is to help orphan children in Mozambique to remain in a loving family home within their communities - usually with their extended family members such as aunties, uncles and grandparents. We believe that many orphan and vulnerable children can have access to a better quality of life when living in the structure of a home and family as apposed to spending years of their precious childhoods in the secluded bubble of an orphanage, where they are kept away from social and cultural frameworks and life lessons that only a family and community can provide. Our project on the ground is run almost entirely by local Mozambicans, the team works closely with the head of the household in each family, and provides them with the support and advice they need to provide a loving and stable home where the basic needs of the child(ren) are met - they have nutritious food, they go to school and are healthy. Longer term we work with each family to help them start a small business so they can eventually try to lift themselves out of poverty. We invest in our families, who are all living in extreme poverty, so that they can continue to love and care for the orphan children they have taken in - this prevents these vulnerable children from having to spend many years in an orphanage.

Story

In February we were forced out of our office in Maputo due to the owner selling. It was a very small shared room, much too cramped and being on the top floor of a block of flats with no lift made it difficult for the team to carry items up and down the stairs for food deliveries and when receiving material donations. Although we needed to move, being forced to has made things quite urgent!

To turn the negative into a positive we've decided to upgrade to a bigger and better suited space where we can settle long term. After an extensive search we have found the one! It's in an ideal location, on the outskirts of the city, with space for an office, temporary accommodation for the children and for volunteers, secure parking and space for outdoor play/educational areas. 

The rent is 13,000 MZN per month (£190-£260), a big but crucial jump. The appeal is to cover 9 months rent for the remainder of 2016 (£260 x 9) any excess funds will go towards decoration/furniture and equipment.
