Batley & Spen Youth Theatre Co has been set up to celebrate the life of and values of the late Jo Cox MP. Hear the People Sing is a massive event taking place over 3 weeks this August, culminating in a week of performances in a pop-up theatre built in an industrial space in Batley, with an audience of over 3,000. There are 3 key parts–a production of Jo’s favourite musical Les Misérables staged by 100 young people of all backgrounds, communities and faiths and led by a team of West End creatives; a second companion piece called More in Common devised by the cast which will celebrate the values Jo stood for - togetherness, collaboration, comradeship, equality; and a production skills training project which will see the participants work alongside top theatre designers and practitioners in an intensive process. The project has been created to celebrate togetherness, benefit the lives of the young people involved, and re-write the narrative of Batley & Spen by harnessing the extraordinary talents, positivity and energy of the young people of the area. It will provide them with access to professional theatre arts training and work experience that will be unique in the region, and indeed the nation. We need your help to make this free at the point of access from the widest possible base of social backgrounds, and to ensure that the participants involvement is based on potential and not financial background. Please donate here, or create a fundraising page and run your own campaign. For more information, and to sign up to receive ticketing updates, please visit our website www.hearthepeoplesing.com
