A new workshop for Church Crookham & Fleet Men's Shed

This year Church Crookham and Fleet Men's Shed are actively trying to raise the funds to purchase our own workshop. This will enable us to bring support to many more members of the local community.

A men’s shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A men’s shed offers members a place to work on projects at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. A shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (eg carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding etc) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

Story

A men's shed is a space for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun.

The Church Crookham & Fleet Men's Shed has been in operation since May 2017. In our first year we have enlisted 25 new members and are growing steadily in numbers. We get involved in many different community projects. We have made a winners podium and jumps for a Pedal Heaven Kids, owl boxes for Fleet Pond Society, bird boxes for Blackwater Valley Conservation Trust, a mud kitchen for a local pre-school, a gadget board for Sunflower Cafe and many more.

Members also bring in their own projects to work on. They have built a bird table, a balance bike, a radio controlled boat, a fairy house for the garden and many DIY projects for the home. There are many different skills being shared and learnt and lots of tea being drunk.

The shed is currently being run from Calthorpe Park School in their design technology room. Although this is great and it has allowed us to get up and running in a very short time our opening times are constrained to after school hours. The sooner we have our own shed the sooner we can open on a daily basis during the day. This will allow many more people from the local community to access our facilities.

We have agreement in principle from Church Crookham Parish Council to use a plot of land. Planning permission has now been granted so its all systems go with the  fund raising. We have received funding that should enable us to lay the base. We also have been donated funds for fencing and security. This campaign will enable us to purchase the building to go on the base.

We've had great support from the local community and it is our hope that this campaign will support a truly great cause and we hope to reach many more members of the community by having our own premises.
