The City of Cambridge Brass Band is one of East Anglia's premier bands with a history going back to 1900. Equally at home in the concert hall and the village green our vision is to translate the community-focused values of traditional brass band origins into the modern era. Our aim is to create charity fundraising events and offer our support, free of charge where possible, to charities and other local causes to help make a real difference in our community. We also have a commitment to the development of young brass talent in the Cambridgeshire region though our Youth Academy and Training Band programmes. In an environment where music teaching is increasingly under threat we aim to encourage school age students to take up a brass instrument, even providing instruments on loan where students are not able to afford their own. The programme offers regular performance opportunities, workshops and masterclasses to develop ensemble skills and musicality. Finally, we aim to promote the development of the brass band genre and have commissioned a number of new works in recent years by well-known composers like Robert Saxton, Christopher Gunning and Martyn Harry. We aim to produce a formal concert series every year to promote brass band music to a new audience.

Story

The City of Cambridge Brass Band Youth Academy was formed in only October 2016 giving the opportunity for advanced young brass and percussion players in the area to develop musically within a traditional brass band setting.

The City of Cambridge Brass Band Training Band was formed in the following May providing the opportunity for less experienced players also to develop.

Despite the continued success of both groups both in terms of numbers and popularity, we still have no tenor hornists! We hope that by purchasing a set of tenor horns for youngsters to use, and by waiving members' subs for these player, we will be able to develop the middle of our bands giving us a more balanced band with fewer missing parts.

The Music Cellar in Preston recognises the importance of youth music and youth brass bands and has very kindly offered three Elkhart tenor horns with Wick mouthpieces at an incredible price. Please help us to be able to take up this offer...any donation no matter how small will be gratefully received.

For further information on both bands, please visit our website, www.cambridgeband.co.uk/youth-academy.

Thanking you in anticipation.
