Story
Disability Initiative is a specialist charity based in the South East Region. We support approximately 100 adults along with their informal carers. Our clients have a complex physical disability, brain injury or sometimes both, the result of varying circumstances, Disability doesn’t discriminate, it can happen to any one of us at any time.
DI provides a range of activities and projects from its purpose-built resource centre in the heart of Camberley, Surrey. We aim to support adults to live life to the full and encourage our clients to achieve their goals, no matter how large or small through the provision of specialist equipment, activities and opportunities.
Each year we need to raise money for a variety of projects. For example: working with a local boxing gym who support disadvantaged children and young adults in the community, we provide non-contact boxing sessions to help our clients with their confidence and co-ordination. We run yoga, pilates and tai-chi sessions for relaxation and to encourage movement and improve posture. We encourage independent living skills and facilitate access to the local community to increase social inclusion and reduce social isolation. Using specialist equipment such as our highly versatile and multi-position Genie wheelchair clients are able to experience the sensation of ‘standing’ again after many years confined to a seated position in a more conventional wheelchair. We also provide Motomeds (assisted exercise bikes) to improve and build muscle tone in both arms and legs for clients with limited mobility. Without funding we would be unable to continue to offer life changing opportunities to our existing and future clients.
Funds raised will enable us to purchase further specialist equipment for clients, support more ‘informal’ carers and provide inspirational; life affirming opportunities for all those attending Disability Initiative.
