In Down Cathedral we have a very fine instrument for accompanying the worship and recital use. Over the years many famous names in the organ world have played it and commented very favourably on its beauty of tone and quality. It was built in the early nineteenth century and subsequently had major rebuilds in 1914 and 1966 by the English company Harrison & Harrison. The local firm Wells-Kennedy Partnership also did some maintenance work and minor tonal revisions in 1987.

The Organist Michael McCracken (mikemusic.mccracken@gmail.com) is very enthusiastic about the project. He has been in talks with one of the UK's leading organ consultants, Paul Hale and also local organ builders and players. Tenders have gone out with regard to pricing for the major work involved.

Over the next year various events are being organised to help raise the necessary funds. Recitals are to be given by pianists such as Barry Douglas and the flautist Sir James Galway.
