Edinburgh Leisure is a charity that creates opportunities for people to lead more active, healthy lives. We raise funds for our Active Communities Programme, which uses physical activity to improve the lives of people affected by poverty, inequalities, disabilities or health conditions.

Story

In Scotland 40% of children leave primary school unable to swim and this is higher for the one in five children in Edinburgh that live in poverty.  Every day their families struggle to make ends meet, often having to cut-back on essentials - so swimming lessons are not affordable.

Children who don't get the opportunity to learn to swim miss out on learning essential life skills and are less likely to be physically active throughout life, which impacts their long term health and wellbeing.  It also puts them at greater risk of drowning, which is the third highest cause of death in children.

Edinburgh Leisure's Jump In project provides up to 10 weeks free pre-school swimming lessons to nursery pupils living in areas of deprivation, followed by 20 weeks of discounted lessons.  It enables them to get active with their family and keeps them safe around water by improving their water confidence and swimming ability.
