Story

Each year at this time scores of marine turtles swim hundreds of miles to the West African coastline to lay their eggs. But nesting season is also when these incredible creatures are most at risk.

Only 1 in 1000 critically endangered leatherback turtles survive to adulthood. Illegal fishers snare females in their nets as they head for land. And even those turtles that reach the coastline are still in danger of being killed brutally by poachers for their meat and eggs.

EJF is working to conserve nesting turtles through community surveillance, reporting, and turtle rescue patrols in local Ghanaian and Liberian coastal towns.

  • £20 pays for the fuel and equipment needed for coastal monitoring and rescuing stranded turtles
  • £60 pays for a community meeting to inform, engage and train volunteers
  • £150 buys a camera to capture evidence of illegal poaching to send to the authorities

Please help protect future generations of vulnerable sea turtles at this crucial time.

About the charity

EJF works in some of the world's most difficult and remote countries to protect vulnerable communities, wildlife and wild places. Our campaigns have led to action on forced labour and human trafficking, national and global bans on deadly pesticides and arrests of illegal 'pirate' fishing trawlers.
