Story
West Wimbledon Primary School is a happy, inclusive and successful community primary school. Our 550 children come from many different backgrounds, faiths and communities. Our school is further enriched by an Autism Base (Treetops) that welcomes children from the full spectrum range.
Being an urban school brings with it challenges, our school is sited beneath the A298 main road where the flyover is literally towering over the playground. This makes our current outdoor space very daunting for many of our more sensitive SEN children.
With physical and financial resources stretched we have no spare classrooms and limited intervention space. We want to create not only an overflow outdoor classroom facility, but also a space that teachers can utilise when the classroom or playground environment is too much for some children. Having an enclosed outdoor space specifically designed with our autistic base in mind would be an unbelievable resource. An area they can use away from the mayhem of the main playground for them to explore safely and calmly. We plan to create an enclosed sensory area designed specifically for these children.
Our school is designed in such a way that there is an outdoor quad space that most of our classrooms look onto. A good sized space (almost 4 classrooms) which requires some love and investment to create an interactive learning environment that can support the learning and development of all our children. Outdoor teaching, has been shown to be a fantastic way to learn. This is particularly the case for our pupils, many of whom would flourish in this environment.
We are a charity run by the parents and supported by the teachers, staff and governors. We run numerous fundraising events and we’ve created Community Days, where the school community volunteer to help fix, paint, clean and clear areas of the school. We are working as hard as we can to raise extra funds to bring the quad back to life. (See below for exciting plans)
