Story
GFC raises money to support NGOs across the globe that work directly within local communities to fund projects based around children’s development. We have supported 210 organisations in over 50 countries world-wide delivering cutting edge support to local organisations, that work directly to benefit the lives of the worlds most vulnerable children. Our challenge for this year's campaign is to get as many people as possible, in 24 hours, to CLOCK UP THE MILES TO CHANGE CHILDREN'S LIVES - have fun, get some exercise! Everyone can take part - as longs as it's on wheels - from bikes to wheelchairs! When you donate - let us know how many miles you covered in the "message" box when making your donation. One of our grassroots partners in the mountainous communities of Colombia - Corporacion Correcaminos - struggle with school retention and unemployment. They work to address these issues by promoting community participation, education and economic opportunities through cycling.
They have 3 main programmes:-
Recreation & Competition programme – This after-school biking and life skills training programme offers 8 hours of training and recreational rides each week for 120 children, as well as 2 hours of life skills workshops that focus on topics such as family planning, drug prevention, and goal setting.
Bike Repair & Job Training programme – Training participants in bike repair and maintenance and operates a small repair shop that employs 7 youth trained by the organisation. The shop serves both community members and visiting cyclists who come to the mountainous town to train.
Biking to School programme – This programme encourages school retention and promotes healthy behaviours by donating bikes that enable children to travel the often long distances to school.
Our campaign was inspired by Mark Beaumont who cycled around the world - 18,000 - in 79 days!
With your help, we can do it in 24 hours - PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND GET THOSE WHEELS TURNING!
