Hall of Clestrain - Help save the home of the great Artic explorer, John Rae

Campaign by John Rae Society

Before we start to restore the Hall we need to have professional surveys done. We have already paid for a structural survey but we now need a survey of the Wood used in the Hall.

The John Rae Society aims to restore The Hall of Clestrain! This is, the famous John Rae’s 18th Century family home. It is an ‘A’ listed building of considerable distinction. We plan to restore the Hall and turn it into an amazing events centre and a resource for the community of Orkney.

Story

Our aim is to restore the Hall after it was damaged in storms in the '50s and to create an exciting attraction to visitors from around the world as well as:

• A facility available to Orkney for education, recreation, commercial and community use e.g. farmers market, produce sales, antique fairs etc.

• A venue for private receptions – weddings, etc.

 • An 18 century working Orkney garden

• An arts and performance venue

• A place where volunteers can learn traditional skills

• An interpretation centre for the Arctic Rim

• The depository for the archive of relevant materials

• A catalyst to increase footfall to the Stromness Museum

• A centre that can build national and international links with bodies such as Historic Buildings Scotland, Royal Geographic Society, Hudson Bay Company and Canda.
