Story
The need among prisoners in Kenya is enormous. People can be imprisoned for simple things like vagrancy, running away from school or drunkenness, as well as for serious crimes. Life in Kenyan prisons and young offender institutions is not easy; there's gross overcrowding, almost no provision of basic hygiene items such as soap and toothpaste - even malnutrition, especially for small children imprisoned with their mothers.
Into this harsh environment, the Lifewords Kenya team brings words of hope and transformation. Using Bible booklets, the team provides an opportunity for inmates to reflect on the Bible's life words and what they say to them. The response is encouraging, with many prisoners having a real thirst for scripture, and the prison staff are delighted to have something positive to give to inmates.
And it's not just Bible booklets that the Lifewords team shares in prison. In the Kamae girls remand prison, the girls have access to the Choose Life programme, taught as part of the prisons's pastoral curriculum. Modules such as Choose Others help the young women reflect on those people who have been good influences on them, and those who have been a bad influence, perhaps even causing them to be in prison.
Will you help those in prison experience the good news of the Bible?
Anything you can give will help Lifewords staff visit prisons and share the Bible's life-giving words:
o £40 could provide Bible booklets for 100 inmates
o £60 could cover Choose Life resources for one group of young people
o £120 could fund travel costs to visit a number of prisons.
Thank you
