Please support the Mater Hospital's team along with Prof Ivan Casserly who are continuing their amazing fundraising journey for the TAVI procedure this year by taking part in the Great Dublin Bike Ride on Sunday 24th September 2017.
The TAVI procedure provides a minimally invasive approach for patients to aortic valve replacement for those who are at high risk for conventional valve replacement using open heart surgery. The TAVI valve is typically delivered through the major artery in the groin and deployed at site of the old narrowed aortic valve in the heart. Funds raised will go towards putting in a hemodynamics system in the Hybrid Operating Theatre in the Mater. The Hybrid Operating Theatre is used to perform the most complex and challenging TAVI procedures, where the TAVI team work with the vascular or cardiothoracic surgeons to find novel ways to deliver the TAVI valve to the heart. This is particularly for patients who have severe blockage in the arteries of the legs that make it challenging or impossible to deliver the TAVI valve from the groin. In these circumstances, we deliver the valve through the artery in the patients arm or the apex of the heart. The availability of the hemodynamics system will enhance the safety of these procedures, and allow the team to have the same quality of information guiding the procedure as we currently have in the catheterisation laboratory.
This provides patients with a non invasive treatment that can be life-saving.
Please support the TAVI team in 2017 by sponsoring them or making a donation and be part of this amazing life saving procedure.
