A catastrophic earthquake occurred in Nepal on 25 April 2015 and a second quake of similar magintude followed on 12 May 2015.
The state of maternity services in Nepal
Maternal and newborn health services in Nepal were not comprehensive before the earthquake and only 35.7% of women gave birth with a skilled birth attendant (WHO 2013). During humanitarian disasters, women and children are especially at risk. UNFPA estimate that 2 million women and girls including 126,000 pregnant women are in urgent need of assistance.
Help the RCM support women and babies in Nepal
The RCM has been twinned with the Midwifery Society of Nepal since 2012 through the Global Midwifery Twinning Project. We have launched a fundraising appeal to help reach women and babies in Nepal with midwifery care and to ensure that, in the future, every woman has access to a midwife.
