Moseley & Kings Heath Shed provides a space that is warm, welcoming and friendly where mainly older people can gather to chat, have a hot drink and a biscuit, share experience, skills and stories so that they can learn from each other, solve problems and gain perspective on their lives.
They are also be able to take part in the activities that the 'Shed' has to offer, facilitating the acquisition of skills and benefiting participants through informal education. The Shed aims to help those who are isolated or lonely find purpose, meaning and reason for moving out of their home environment/s and engaging in the social scene, as well as being encouraged to take part in the activities that are available within and linked with the Shed's sphere of influence.
Although many similar such 'Sheds' encourage membership specifically from among older men, Moseley & Kings Heath Shed impose no such limitations, indeed welcomes any and all persons. Other community organisations and charities that operate in the area have benefited from services that the 'Shed' is able to provide.
This includes accommodating carers from health organisations who accompany their client(s) to shed sessions, and having our volunteers work with community groups to supply them with items such as noticeboards and bird boxes. Our members love making things, and our supporters love donating there unwanted items. We really appreciate all that is given to us but are finding it increasingly difficult to store ongoing projects, donated timber, secondhand tools and many other bulky items. In order to deal with this issue trustees and volunteers would like to be able to build somewhere to store items like these.
Our volunteers are dynamic 'can-do' people and trustees aim to open this project up to select individuals rather than buying something 'off the shelf'. This will save money and give volunteers a sense of purpose and great satisfaction.
