Story
The magnificent East Window dominates Newport Minster filling it with coloured light. The window tells two interwoven stories; one shows the building and destruction of the first Jerusalem temple and the other depicts events in Jesus' life relating to Jerusalem and the temple.
The large central panel may have told a different story at one point but we don't know because it was partly destroyed in the 2nd World War and the gaps filled with blue and yellow glass. When it was restored in the late 1950s no one could remember what it had been like.
Today the window is under threat again as it is buckling and the stonework is crumbling, causing some panes to crack. Others have been damaged by stones.
There are over 6,000 panes of glass in the window which means it will cost approximately £10 to restore each pane. The good news is that for every pound we raise we can get another through match funding! Can you help by sponsoring a pane of glass for £5 today?
