Story
This intricately carved doorway, originally reached by a much grander staircase and tower, is an architectural masterpiece! Named after Norfolk’s wealthy family of Earls, the Bigod Arch was the ceremonial Norman entrancefor the privileged few who were invited to the Royal Palace. It was originally painted in vibrant colours, designed to inspire awe in visitors, but also demonstrate great skill and riches. The highly decorative carvings contain many symbols of Greek mythology. On your next visit look out for Pegasus, the winged horse, a knight on his knees, thought to be Hercules, as well as an eagle and a dragon! The arch represents the project as a whole as the Gateway to Medieval England.
