Huntington's is fatal disease which damages the brain. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 30 and 50 and it worsens over time, affecting the person's ability to think, reason, walk and talk, leading to them needing full-time care.
Every child of a parent with Huntington's has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene, and currently there is no cure.
Dr Shouqing Luo leads a team of scientists at Plymouth University investigating the potential of manipulating activity at cellular level in order to develop an effective therapy.
This pioneering research will receive a major boost in 2017 when we open the new £14.8m Derriford Research Facility, which will facilitate collaborations between researcher, clinicians and the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. However, we can move faster and closer to a cure - and bring hope - with your support to purchase an essential piece of kit: a high quality fluorescence microscope to enable the study of levels of toxic proteins in the brain.Charities pay a small fee for our service.
