Story

For over 10 years volunteer psychiatrists have been involved in mental health education in Malawi. Thanks to you and others, SMMHEP has been extraordinarily successful. Achievements include:

  • 800 medical students trained in psychiatry
  • A postgraduate course established and 3 postgraduate trainees enrolled
  • Improvements at Zomba Mental Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

Despite these successes, Malawi does not currently have a permanent consultant psychiatrist and the Department of Mental Health remains dependent on SMMHEP to support its teaching and training activities.

We are aiming to raise £10,000 per year of funding through donations, to enable us to continue the current teaching programme and to support the postgraduate trainees to get established as the future of psychiatry in Malawi.

If you would be prepared to help us raise this amount, we would be very grateful. We hope that you would consider an amount of £100 / £250 / £500 or whatever other amount you want to give.

About the charity

SMMHEP aims to provide sustainable support for psychiatric teaching for health care professionals in Malawi. The project has enjoyed close links within Malawi since 2006 and became a registered Scottish Charity in 2008. Currently the principal activites are delivery of undergraduate medical student teaching, and ECT equipment and training.
