Story
60% of people in Malawi live below the poverty line and families spend up to 15% of their income on kerosene or torch batteries to light their home at night. By contrast, when a family owns a solar light, their health is improved, they save money and children can study after dark.
Because of the historic political and cultural ties between Scotland and Malawi, the 2020 Climate Group have committed to raise £400,000 to help provide a brighter future in Malawi. We’re £325,000 of the way there. Help us get the next £75,000!
Scotland will light up Malawi by using SolarAid’s distribution network and market experience to ensure we can deliver lights to the most disadvantaged families. We’ll measure our impact with Glasgow Caledonian University to guarantee the best outcome for climate justice and poverty reduction and we’re educating communities at home in Scotland on the issues of climate change in schools with the help of Keep Scotland Beautiful.
