Story

Mary's Beat is a fund created in memory of Mary Christabel Dyer. Administered by Somerset Community Foundation. The Fund provides grants for people with physical disabilities and/ or learning disabilities living in Somerset or Devon to take part in music therapy, one-off concerts or outdoor activities.

Mary, who sadly died in 2017, was born with severe disabilities and required constant care, however she lived a rich and rewarding life. She loved attending live music concerts and enjoyed the great outdoors: camping, walking in her adapted wheelchair, and cycling in her ‘Duet’ wheelchair bike. Mary's sister Esther talks about how activities enriched Mary's life and those around her here

During the summer of 2018, Mary's father Piers and her aunty Rachel completed a sponsored 912 mile cycle ride from Somerset to Le Mans and back for Mary's Beat, revisiting where Mary had cycled with her family. They continue to raise funds for Mary's Beat.

To date, Mary's Beat has awarded more than 30 grants worth over £20,000 thanks to donations to the Fund. Mary's family would like to thank everyone for their amazing generosity and support. Anonymised grant award details and further information can be found here.
