Story
Every child should be given opportunities to grow and develop, but unfortunately this isn't the case. Organised by NE Youth, 10 community organisations will be walking 84 miles of Hadrian's Wall in 1 day! A team of S4A's staff and volunteers will be taking some of our children, young people and their parents to walk a 8-mile section of the wall from Burgh on Sands to Carlisle. All funds raised will go towards the 3-week Summer School which aims to address this issue of exclusion.
S4A's 3-week Summer School aims to address this issue. Children and young people in disadvantaged areas can be left bored and unstimulated, mentally and physically over the school holidays due to financial strain. Families are faced with the difficult decision of either taking unpaid leave or paying for expensive childcare, days out or holidays.
We are planning to run a variety of activities. In the morning, the children and young people will take part in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering an Maths) project based learning which will involve lots of experiments and building. They will also be learning different about different cultures and languages in fun and creative ways, like Skyping someone from a different country!
In the afternoon the children and young people can choose what activities they would like to take part in. There will be lots of options offered; including sports, healthy cooking, gardening, up-cycling, music, coding and mini trips where they will explore local free outdoor areas and activities.
Every Friday, we will take the children and young people on big trips out, that will be close to Newcastle but a little further afield which often the children and young people have not had the opportunity to go to before. We're planning St Mary's Lighthouse, Gibside National Park and Beamish Museum.
All funds will be used to buy activity resources and go towards the entry costs of the big trips.
