Story
Sleeping rough at any age is a dangerous experience. Sleeping rough when you are older is life threatening.
Older people who sleep rough face assault, serious health problems such as pneumonia, arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney failure and exacerbated mental health issues. As well as the additional trauma of fear and isolation. Older women are at risk of even greater forms of abuse.
Last year:
• 857 men and women over the age of 55 slept rough on the streets of London.
• 194 of these people were over 65 years of age.
Thames Reach has a dedicated team working specifically with older people, helping them to leave the streets and find a warm, safe place to start rebuilding their lives.
