The RSS is a body with over 8,000 members worldwide. Its vision is for data to be at the heart of understanding and decision making. To achieve this it promotes statistical literacy amongst journalists, politicians, educators and in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

Story

The Royal Statistical Society has launched the Statistics in Africa Appeal, an exciting new initiative to help fund RSS Fellows to volunteer in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon or Tanzania as lecturers on statistics and probability MSc courses teaching talented African students at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).

"Teaching at AIMS is inspiring and humbling" Peter Diggle, RSS President

Improving statistical education in Africa is an important part of developing the continent’s infrastructure. By teaching and inspiring African statisticians through AIMS, the RSS is investing for a longer-term impact to:

  • Empower Africa’s youth to shape its future
  • Build capacity for African statistics and data science expertise
  • Enable better governance, agriculture, commerce and health
  • Help drive economic self-sufficiency
