Story
Melanie is a bright, energetic 11yr old girl, in her first year of secondary school. She lives with her Mother in a one bedroom flat. Because of illness they are struggling to manage all the bills, rent and food costs and Melanie is failing at school because of poor behaviour.
This is Melanie's bedroom. She feels ashamed, embarrassed, anxious and frustrated that she cannot change this situation for herself or help her mother so they can afford to buy a bed.
With your support The Childhood Trust is helping Melanie and her mother as well as other children in similar conditions. We have seen from past experience what a difference a redecoration can make to a child living in such a room.
The Childhood Trust plans to completely transform Melanie's bedroom, with paint, a new bed, duvet, pillows, wardrobe, shelves, carpet and curtains. We will also put in a desk so that Melanie has a place do her homework.
The impact of this on Melanie and her Mother will be enormous. She can invite her friends over to play without feeling ashamed and Melanie will be reminded every day that people really care about her. This kind of boost can give a young person in Melanie's difficult situation a reminder that she is valued and a better chance of succeeding at school and socially.
Using volunteers, the project will cost approximately £1000, any funds left over will be used for the next project. The impact of this transformation and the care shown by the volunteers and supporters who make it possible, will last a lifetime.
