Sunnara Knitting Program for Underprivileged and Refugee Women

Organised by ULYP

Sunnara reflects the proverb, “give someone a fish and feed them for a day; teach someone to fish and feed them for a lifetime.” Sunnara gives women the ‘fishing’ hook and teaches them how to ‘fish.’

We aim to break down social barriers caused by civil conflict and instability, and end the marginalization of underprivileged children, youth and women. We provide educational and recreational programs, through which we teach peace building and human rights and promote respect and understanding.

Story

Sunnara  is the Arabic term used for the knitting needle or crochet needle. It is also the term used for the word hook.

Due to popular demand coming from our “Most Outstanding Mothers” (MOMs) program participants, Unite Lebanon Youth Project (ULYP) is launching the Sunnara  project to invite underprivileged and refugee women to a world where they can work from home kitting and crocheting. They will learn to make basic clothing and decorative items for their families and later become entrepreneurs, producing items that they can sell to others and generate income.

Your donation of $70 gives a woman a basket of yarn, three sets of knitting needles, and group knitting lessons by a professional for 2weeks. It also covers the transportation to class, a coffee break, and a snack to keep her learning and knitting.
